USDA Weekly Crop Progress Report - Corn Rated 57% Good to Excellent; Soybeans 58% Good to Excellent as of Aug. 30

OMAHA (DTN) -- Corn good-to-excellent ratings held steady last week, while soybean ratings declined, according to USDA NASS's weekly Crop Progress report released Monday.

Early September will feel more like summer across much of the country, with hot and mostly dry conditions in the South and Southeast and scattered showers in the northern Corn Belt, according to DTN Ag Meteorologist John Baranick.

CORN

-- Crop development: Corn in the dough stage was estimated at 92%, 3 percentage points ahead of both last year and the five-year average of 89%. Corn dented was estimated at 62%, 6 percentage points ahead of both last year and the five-year average of 56%. Corn mature was pegged at 13%, 1 percentage point behind last year's 14% and steady with the five-year average.

-- Crop condition: NASS estimated that 57% of the crop was in good-to-excellent condition, steady with the previous week and 12 percentage points below last year's 69%. Seventeen percent of the crop was rated very poor to poor, steady with the previous week and 8 percentage points above the previous year's 9%. "Iowa remains the best rated at 77% good to excellent," DTN Senior Analyst Dana Mantini said.

SOYBEANS

-- Crop development: Soybeans setting pods were estimated at 95%, 2 percentage points ahead of both last year and the five-year average of 93%. Soybean dropping leaves were pegged at 13%, 3 percentage points ahead of last year's 10% and 4 percentage points ahead of the five-year average of 9%.

-- Crop condition: NASS estimated that 58% of soybeans were in good-to-excellent condition, 2 percentage point below the previous week's 60% and 7 percentage points below the previous year's 65%. Like corn, Iowa led the nation in soybean conditions, with 77% rated good to excellent. North Dakota, meanwhile, was rated at just 30% good to excellent, with 29% rated very poor to poor, Mantini said.

SPRING WHEAT

-- Harvest progress: Spring wheat harvest moved ahead 15 percentage points last week to reach 77% complete as of Sunday. That was 8 percentage points ahead of last year's pace of 69% and 9 percentage points ahead of the five-year average of 68%. Spring wheat harvest was 95% complete in South Dakota, followed by Washington at 90% and Minnesota at 88%. Montana lagged at 66% complete.

THE WEEK AHEAD IN WEATHER

A stalled front could bring beneficial rain to parts of the northern Corn Belt this week, though heat and dryness will continue to increase drought across the South and Southeast, according to DTN Ag Meteorologist John Baranick.

"Though we're heading into September, it certainly won't feel like fall this week across really anywhere in the country," Baranick said. "The South and Southeast are going to be extremely hot and largely dry, causing increasing drought stress but pushing the summer crop toward maturity if it hasn't come already. Across the north, it'll still be above normal, and a lot of areas are going to be up in the 80s to lower 90s for much of the week. However, a stalled front from Nebraska to Michigan will be waffling around and producing some areas of showers and thunderstorms throughout the week. We could see temperatures be a little more variable depending on when those showers move through. And the rain could still be helpful for the portion of the crop that is not yet mature. There are still plenty of green leaves up this way that could still use a drink. But we'll have to watch some areas for flooding and severe weather at times. Eventually, the eastern end of the front will drift south through the Corn Belt and into the Southeast this weekend, bringing temperatures down a few degrees and getting a few more showers to move through."

This Week's Drought Summary (8/27)

During the early part of last week, an amplified ridge-trough pattern over North America brought widespread late summer heat to the West and south-central US, with milder temperatures overspreading the Corn Belt and gradually shifting to the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states. The north side of the mean ridge provided a focus for convective activity, with narrow swaths of locally heavy rainfall extending across Nebraska and Missouri, while shortwave troughs brought several rounds of storms to the eastern Corn Belt and parts of the mid-Atlantic and southern New England. Underneath the ridge, dry weather combined with excessive heat continued to promote rapid onset drought across much of the South region. Across the Southeast, summer convection competed with enhanced evapotranspirative demand due to hot temperatures, causing some degradation in areas that missed out on thunderstorm activity. Across the West, an active monsoon pattern continued to bring localized relief to parts of Arizona and New Mexico, while excessive heat and drier conditions promoted drought expansion across eastern New Mexico and portions of the Intermountain West, Great Basin, and the Northwest.

Across Alaska, improved rainfall eased drought conditions over the central interior, while drier weather sparked some degradation over the southeast. Across Hawaii, following widespread heavy rainfall from Hurricane Lala in the previous week, Tropical Storm Moke passed well south of the state, bringing enhanced flow and precipitation to the windward sides of the islands. Across the Caribbean, a suppressed convective regime continued to promote gradual drought expansion across Puerto Rico.


Northeast

Two rounds of storminess overspread the Mid-Atlantic states and southern New England during the week, bringing widespread accumulations of 1–2 inches across northern West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. Higher amounts fell across parts of New Jersey and Long Island, causing isolated flooding in urban areas and along small streams. The rainfall boosted soil moisture and streamflows across the region, bringing some reduction in the drought depiction across eastern West Virginia, southeastern Pennsylvania, the Delmarva, New Jersey, and Long Island. One limiting factor in broader-scale drought reduction is groundwater conditions, which have been slower to respond following prolonged dryness in prior months. Across Upstate New York and northern New England, rainfall was more widely scattered. While precipitation brought localized relief to central New Hampshire, surrounding areas experienced degradation due to worsening impacts from short-term dryness.

Southeast

A fairly typical summer convective regime remained in place over the Southeast, with the heaviest thunderstorms occurring in the seabreeze-favored regions of the Gulf Coast and South Atlantic coastal plain, resulting in localized improvements across Virginia and the Carolinas. Convection was more meager across central Alabama and Georgia, where above-average temperatures drove gradual degradation. Small areas of degradation also occurred in North Florida, the Treasure Coast, and portions of South Florida due to persistent heat and a lackluster seabreeze regime. The extent of remaining drought across Florida in late August is extremely unusual, as wet-season rainfall to date has been unable to fully erase the severe deficits built up during the winter and spring.

South

Under a persistent heat dome ridge maintaining mostly dry conditions and unrelenting heat, widespread rapid drought expansion continued for another week across the South region. Weekly maximum temperatures exceeded 100 degrees F across nearly the entire region - with the exception of Tennessee - and peaked above 110 degrees along the Texas-Oklahoma border. Condition Monitoring Observer Reports (CMOR) submitted to the National Drought Mitigation Center highlighted rapidly worsening impacts, including dry stock ponds, wilting trees, dust storms, and elevated wildfire activity. Drought expansion and intensification were most pronounced across Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas, while conditions also began to noticeably deteriorate across Mississippi. Small-scale convection provided only highly localized, brief relief to isolated portions of central Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Midwest

Following the widespread heavy rainfall that fell across the Corn Belt in the previous week, lighter precipitation and milder temperatures overspread the region. Conditions were adequate to maintain a drought-free status quo across Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio, while showers brought some relief to Michigan's Lower Peninsula, northern Illinois, and southern Wisconsin. In contrast, another dry week across portions of Minnesota, western and northern Wisconsin, and Michigan's Upper Peninsula aggravated ongoing drought impacts, leading to localized degradation. Severe drought (D3) expanded across northwestern Wisconsin and into eastern Minnesota.

High Plains

The High Plains saw a mixture of drought degradation and localized improvement. Rapid drought deterioration continued across southern Kansas and southeastern Colorado, where dry conditions and excessive heat aggravated agricultural impacts. Further north, widespread convection brought drought relief east of the Front Range across eastern Colorado, though some deterioration occurred in the Rockies of Colorado and Wyoming where water storage impacts from last spring's limited snow cover are beginning to mount. Organized convection along the northern periphery of the ridge promoted drought reduction in central Nebraska. Showers mostly maintained a status-quo depiction across South Dakota, save for small areas of degradation along its respective borders with North Dakota and Minnesota. More widespread drought degradation was noted across North Dakota, where precipitation was sparser outside of a single, narrow convective event that tracked across the northeastern corner of the state.


West

Seasonal dryness continued across the Pacific Coast states and much of the Great Basin, where persistent above-normal temperatures drove high demand on water resources and led to localized degradation. Extreme Drought (D3) expanded slightly across southern Oregon and northern Washington, where soil moisture and groundwater levels remained critically poor. Extreme to Exceptional (D4) drought also expanded into northeastern Idaho, with degradation noted in small portions of Utah and the southern California deserts. Elsewhere, ongoing monsoonal convection promoted drought relief across much of Arizona and western New Mexico, though persistent heat and dry conditions drove drought expansion across eastern New Mexico.


Caribbean

With a suppressed convective regime remaining in place over the Caribbean basin—due in part to the strengthening El NiƱo across the tropical Pacific—drought conditions continued to expand and intensify across Puerto Rico. While isolated rainfall fell over existing drought areas and briefly stabilized topsoil moisture, accumulations were insufficient to overcome mounting deficits, and impacts to streamflows, agriculture, reservoirs, and aquifers continue to build. Similar conditions persisted across the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Extreme Drought (D3) remains entrenched. Absent a significant shift in the large-scale weather pattern, conditions are poised to deteriorate even further in the coming weeks.

Short-term extreme drought continued this week across the U.S. Virgin Islands. Rainfall amounts for this week remained paltry, with up to 0.24 inches on St. Croix, up to 0.14 inches on St. Thomas, and up to 0.25 inches on St. John. Vegetation conditions across the area continued to deteriorate, while potable water demand outpaced production on St. Croix and numerous cisterns ran dry, per news reports. Rainfall shortages are especially notable across the U.S. Virgin Islands at the three-month mark, and conditions will continue to be monitored for possible further degradation.

Pacific

In Alaska, wet weather during the week helped trim the northern extent of recent-onset Moderate Drought (D1) across the central interior. In contrast, drier conditions across the Copper River Basin led to localized expansion of Abnormal Dryness (D0).

Across Hawaii, following the heavy rainfall and strong winds from Hurricane Lala the previous week, Tropical Storm Moke passed well south of the islands. While Moke brought no direct impacts, the system enhanced northeasterly flow over the state, generating locally heavy rainfall on the windward sides of the islands. Because these areas were already drought-free, no changes to the drought depiction were warranted this week.

American Samoa remained in short-term moderate drought this week. In Pago Pago, 0.45 inches of rain were reported, while 0.44 inches were reported at Siufaga Ridge and 0.16 inches at Toa Ridge.

In Palau, short-term abnormal dryness continued this week, though water levels have improved somewhat after weekly rain reports included amounts of 2.09 and 3.43 inches.

The Mariana Islands remained free of drought or abnormal dryness this week. Following a drier week, 1.7 inches of rain fell on Saipan this week. At least 2.97 inches of rain fell on Tinian this week. Rota’s weekly rainfall report came in at 2.36 inches, continuing a recent stretch of wet weather there. In Guam, 3.04 inches of rain were reported this week.

The Republic of the Marshall Islands was free of drought or abnormal dryness this week. Conditions in Jaluit improved from short-term abnormal dryness to normal conditions after receiving at least 3.44 inches of rain. In Kwajalein, at least 3.86 inches of rain fell this week. In Ailinglapalap, at least 3.43 inches of rain fell this week. In Utirik, 1.98 inches of rain fell this week after a pair of much drier weeks, keeping abnormal dryness from developing. Wotje received a total of 4.45 inches of rain. Rain this week in Majuro and Mili totaled 3.66 and 2.02 inches, respectively.

Short-term abnormal dryness in Yap ceased after a deluge of over 22 inches of rain there, including over 16 inches on August 21. After a couple of drier weeks in Ulithi, 4.89 inches of rain fell there, so conditions remained normal. In Woleai, 1.71 inches of rain fell this week, marking the third consecutive week with less than 2 inches but a much higher total than the previous two weeks. Given a quite wet July there, conditions have not yet fallen into abnormal dryness, but this will be monitored moving forward. In Chuuk, at least 3.05 inches of rain fell this week. In Lukunor, at least 3.26 inches of rain fell this week. In Nukuoro, 2.73 inches of rain fell this week. Short-term abnormal dryness developed in Kapingamarangi, where no rain fell this week, marking the third consecutive week with less than 2 inches of rain. In Pohnpei, wet weather continued with 5.15 inches of rain this week. In Kosrae, at least 6.26 inches of rain fell this week after over 13 inches fell last week. No drought monitor depictions were made for Fananu or Pingelap, as no data were available for either location this week.

Looking Ahead

Over the next 7 days, upper-level ridging centered over the western U.S. is forecast to progress eastward, shifting hotter conditions to the East while bringing a potential reprieve from extreme temperatures to the West. Excessive heat will persist across the south-central U.S., which may continue to fuel rapid drought expansion and intensification. Enhanced monsoonal convection is favored across Arizona, with moisture extending northward into Utah and parts of the northern Rockies, while light, early-season precipitation may overspread southern California. Forecast precipitation amounts across the South region would be insufficient to offset ongoing moisture deficits. Across the Midwest, light to locally moderate precipitation is expected. Seasonal convection will linger across the Southeast early in the period before drier conditions move in by the end of the period. Along the Eastern Seaboard, initial storminess will give way to drier conditions, though unsettled weather may return to the Northeast by late week.

For the 8-to-14-day period, below-normal temperatures are favored across the Northwest, while elevated odds for above-normal temperatures extend across much of the remainder of the CONUS. The highest probabilities for excessive heat remain anchored over the south-central and southeastern U.S., maintaining heavy evapotranspirative demand in regions experiencing rapid drought degradation. Above-normal temperatures are also favored across Hawaii and the Alaska Panhandle and southeastern Alaska, while below-normal temperatures are more likely across the rest of Mainland Alaska. The precipitation outlook exhibits a weaker signal for the CONUS, with slightly enhanced chances for above-normal precipitation across the western U.S. and New England, while near-normal precipitation is favored elsewhere. High probabilities for above-normal precipitation extend across Hawaii, with enhanced odds for above-normal rainfall exist across most of Alaska except for the Panhandle.

USDA Weekly Crop Progress Report - Corn Rated 57% Good to Excellent; Soybeans 60% Good to Excellent as of Aug. 23

OMAHA (DTN) -- The national corn crop continued its downward trend last week, with its good-to-excellent rating dropping 3 percentage points, while soybean ratings also declined, according to USDA NASS's weekly Crop Progress report released Monday.

A front stuck across the far south will bring heavy rain to areas of the Delta that need it, while a cold front moves across the country with scattered showers in the Plains and western Midwest, followed by heavier rain later in the week and next week, according to DTN Ag Meteorologist John Baranick.

CORN

-- Crop development: Corn in the dough stage was estimated at 86%, 5 percentage points ahead of last year's 81% and 4 percentage points ahead of the five-year average of 82%. Corn dented was estimated at 45%, 3 percentage points ahead of last year's 42% and 4 percentage points ahead of the five-year average of 41%. Corn mature was pegged at 6%, steady with last year's pace and the five-year average.

-- Crop condition: NASS estimated that 57% of the crop was in good-to-excellent condition, down 3 percentage points from the previous week of 60% and 14 percentage points below last year's 71%. Seventeen percent of the crop was rated very poor to poor, 2 percentage points above the previous week's 15% and 9 percentage points above the previous year's 8%. DTN Lead Analyst Rhett Montgomery noted the 3-point decline marked the lowest late-August rating in three years. North Dakota led state-by-state declines, with its poor-to-very-poor rating increasing 10 percentage points.

SOYBEANS

-- Crop development: Soybeans setting pods were estimated at 91%, 3 percentage points ahead of both last year and the five-year average of 88%. Soybean dropping leaves were pegged at 6%, 2 percentage points ahead of last year and the five-year average of 4%.

-- Crop condition: NASS estimated that 60% of soybeans were in good-to-excellent condition, 1 percentage point below the previous week's 61% and 9 percentage points below the previous year's 69%. Montgomery said the national rating was the lowest for this week in August in three years. As with corn, North Dakota led state declines, with 8 points added to the poor-to-very-poor category.

SPRING WHEAT

-- Harvest progress: Spring wheat harvest moved ahead 21 percentage points last week to reach 62% complete as of Sunday. That was 11 percentage points ahead of last year's pace of 51% and 10 percentage points ahead of the five-year average of 52%.

-- Crop condition: NASS estimated that 51% of the crop was in good-to-excellent condition nationwide, down 1 percentage point from the previous week's 52%. Montgomery said crop ratings were steady or improved in all states but North Dakota, where good-to-excellent ratings fell 5 percentage points, pulling the national average down.

THE WEEK AHEAD IN WEATHER

The week will bring additional showers to the Delta, scattered showers across the Plains and western Midwest and heavier rain later in the week, creating some harvest challenges while helping fill grains and prep soils ahead of winter wheat planting, according to DTN Ag Meteorologist John Baranick.

"Some areas got some needed rainfall last week, and some wet areas in Illinois through Ohio got more that they didn't need," Baranick said. "Heat has been constant across the South-Central U.S., and a lot of this same activity will again occur this week. There is a front that is stuck now across the far south and we're seeing some heavy rain in areas that really need it in the Delta, and we'll see some additional showers there this week and less heat overall, but it should be a lot like last week.

"There is a system moving through Canada and that will be pushing a cold front across the country this week. Scattered showers in the Plains and western Midwest will turn to isolated showers farther east, somewhat beneficial for filling grains. For those beginning harvest, especially with spring wheat, they'll have to dodge showers, but they'll get a drier period midweek to get some work done. That's ahead of the next system that will be moving through with showers in the Northern Plains on Friday and then spreading across the country this weekend. That system is likely to produce some heavier rain, and a system that moves through early next week will continue the chance for some areas of heavy rain as well. With how advanced the crop is becoming, the rainfall isn't like to have a huge influence on crop conditions, but could stop some areas from seeing declines. The rainfall in the Plains should help to prep soils ahead of winter wheat planting next month. We are going to need much more than what is forecast this week, but the pattern could be a little more favorable in early September, we'll have to see."

This Week's Drought Summary (8/20)

The area with the highest rainfall amounts this past week was primarily a wide band from Nebraska east to Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia. Totals over 5 inches were observed in central Illinois and Indiana, with some areas of east Indiana receiving over a foot of rain in the past week. These storms were tracking to the east on the north-side of a high pressure over the southern U.S. The northern Great Plains states also received 1 to 3 inches over wide areas, as did southeast Wyoming, eastern Colorado, and northwest Kansas. In the Southwest, monsoonal flow continued with scattered storms, providing rainfall amounts generally between 0.5 and 1.5 inches. The eastern seaboard from Maine to Florida received scattered but moderate rainfall. The high pressure over the southern U.S. suppressed precipitation over the southern Great Plains and lower Mississippi valley. There was also very limited precipitation in the west coastal states as well as in Michigan and most of Wisconsin.

Temperatures were particularly above normal in the southern Great Plains and lower Mississippi valley, with the warmest above normal area over Oklahoma. The west as well as the southeast were also a few degrees above normal. Rain and storms in the central states from Wyoming to Ohio kept temperatures in this region slightly below average. The northern Great Plains had the coldest below normal temperatures.


Northeast

Northern Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont had limited rainfall in the past week, leading to degradations in drought. Deterioration of soil moisture and streamflow were noted in this area. Elsewhere, localized precipitation resulted in small improvement in drought conditions in upstate New York and in central and eastern Massachusetts. Similarly, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia had some improvements where there was significant rain during the past week.

Southeast

Southern Alabama had wide areas of drought degradation in the southwest part of the state from the warm temperatures and lack of rainfall, shown by flash drought indicators among other metrics. Meanwhile, central Virginia and western North Carolina had drought improvement from the rainfall over the past week. The rest of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida were mostly status quo for the past week, with only limited areas showing small drought improvements or degradations. There remain some areas of extreme drought in northern North Carolina, coastal South Carolina, and some areas in Florida.

Dryness and drought continued over this region for the past week. All states saw declining drought conditions. The high pressure over the South resulted in anomalously warm temperatures and almost no precipitation. Flash drought conditions had led to dry ponds and creeks and poor to very poor crop conditions in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Drought also was degraded over much of southern Mississippi. The only area with drought improvement was eastern Tennessee, where there was significant rainfall. Extreme to exceptional drought conditions continue in western Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle, as well as southeastern Arkansas.

Midwest

Widespread and heavy rainfall fell in an area from Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, to eastern Kentucky. Eastern Kentucky had a two-category improvement from heavy rainfalls from the storm tracks. The rainfall led to removal of all abnormally dry areas in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky as well as most of Illinois. Iowa, Illinois, and northern Missouri had drought improvement, while southern Missouri had degradation from the warm temperatures and lack of rainfall. Further north, Michigan and Wisconsin had moderate areas of drought degradation with little to no rainfall in the past week. Minnesota had more scattered rainfall, resulting in small areas of both drought improvement and degradation. There is an area of extreme drought in northern Wisconsin.

High Plains

Southern Kansas had some drought degradations from the flash drought warm and dry conditions over the past week. However, eastern Colorado and Wyoming east through Nebraska and northern Kansas received welcome rainfall resulting in drought improvements in these areas. South Dakota was mostly status quo from the past week. North Dakota was mostly dry leading to degradation in drought. Two areas in the southwest and northwest of North Dakota received some rainfall and drought improvement. Extreme drought continues to be in place over western South Dakota and western Nebraska, extending into much of Wyoming and central/western Colorado. Exceptional drought locations are noted in western Nebraska and parts of Colorado.


West

The western states of California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and northern Utah generally received little rainfall. There were small to moderate areas in each of these locations with drought degradations. Southern Utah and Arizona experienced some monsoonal rainfall leading to small areas of drought improvement. Eastern New Mexico was warm and dry and had areas of drought degradation. Areas near the Idaho/Montana border as well as northeastern Montana received the most rainfall. Southeastern Montana received little rainfall resulting in a corresponding area of drought degradation. There are areas of extreme drought in Utah, southern Idaho, and in Oregon, with exceptional drought in northeastern Oregon and far southern Idaho.


Caribbean

Over Puerto Rico, continued dry conditions and record-low streamflow were observed. Water service restrictions have continued over some parts of the Commonwealth. Much of Puerto Rico had drought degradations from the previous week. Extreme drought covers the eastern part of Puerto Rico as well as in the southwestern part.

Short-term extreme drought continued across the U.S. Virgin Islands this week. Rainfall amounts were paltry in most areas, with up to 0.29 inches on St. John and up to 0.56 inches on St. Croix, with smaller amounts in most locations. Vegetation continued to struggle this week, and groundwater levels remained about the same or dropped amidst extremely low 1- and 3-month rain totals. While the current short-term drought, statistically, is not yet at exceptional drought level, conditions will be monitored for possible degradation moving forward if dry weather continues. In addition to adverse impacts to vegetation and well levels, widespread livestock casualties have also been reported.

Pacific

In Alaska, two areas in the eastern part of the state had abnormally dry areas introduced. Much of southeast Alaska in the panhandle continues to be dry, although there was rain in the far north of the panhandle, leading to some drought improvement.

In Hawaii, Hurricane Lana passed just south of the islands last weekend, with extremely heavy rainfall over much of the state, especially on the eastern side of the islands. Most of the abnormally dry areas were removed, with some areas remaining on the west side of the islands where rainfall totals were lower.

Little to no rain fell this week in American Samoa at Pago Pago, Siufaga Ridge and Toa Ridge. Moderate short-term drought developed, as less than 1 inch of rain has fallen four of the last five weeks at Pago Pago.

A dry week occurred in Palau following a few recent dry weeks with less than 1 inch of rain. Satellite imagery also suggested drying of vegetation in some areas, and short-term abnormal dryness developed.

The Mariana Islands remained free of drought or abnormal dryness this week. On Saipan, 0.63 inches of rain fell this week after 3.11 inches fell last week. On Tinian, the week was drier, with 0.18 inches of rain having been reported (with a couple days missing). However, 6.01 inches of rain fell there last week. On Rota, 3.1 inches of rain fell, continuing a recent wet spell there. On Guam, 0.67 inches of rain fell this week after 4.82 fell last week.

Utirik, Wotje, Majuro and Mili remained free of drought or abnormal dryness this week. Utirik reported 0.75 inches of rain this week after just 0.06 inches last week, but over 2 inches the week prior kept conditions from degrading to abnormal dryness this week. In Wotje, 1.95 inches of rain were reported this week. In Majuro, 3.76 inches of rain were reported, and in Mili, 5.79 inches of rain fell, marking two weeks in a row with at least 5 inches of rain. Kwajalein remained free of drought or abnormal dryness this week after 2.27 inches of rain fell. In Ailinglapalap, 1.73 inches of rain were reported, with one day missing, and conditions remained free of drought or abnormal dryness. In Jaluit, 1.68 inches of rain were reported, with one day missing, marking the third week in a row with less than 2 inches of rain, and short-term abnormal dryness developed.

Dry weather continued for another week in Yap, with no rain having been reported this week, marking the third week in a row with less than 1 inch of rain, and short-term abnormal dryness developed. In Ulithi, 0.21 inches of rain fell, marking the third consecutive week with less than 2 inches of rain. Conditions will be further monitored there, though the conditions are not yet abnormally dry. In Woleai, 0.33 inches of rain fell this week, marking the second week in a row with less than an inch of rain. In Chuuk, 10.12 inches of rain fell this week, over half of which fell on Aug. 18. In Lukunor, 5.94 inches of rain fell after a much drier preceding 2 weeks. In Nukuoro, 3.19 inches of rain fell this week after three weeks in a row with less than 2 inches. In Kapingamarangi, 1.57 inches of rain fell, marking two weeks in a row with less than 2 inches of rain. However, wet conditions prior to this have kept abnormal levels of dryness at bay. In Pohnpei, 8.14 inches of rain fell this week. In Kosrae, 13.76 inches of rain fell this week. No Drought Monitor depictions were made in Fananu or Pingelap, as no data were available for those locations.

Looking Ahead

Over the next five days leading up to next Tuesday, above-normal rainfall is possible east of the I-95 corridor along the Atlantic coast. Eastern Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania could also be wet, as well as northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. The area where the Ohio River and Mississippi River meet is also forecast to receive above-normal rainfall. The Southeast should above-normal rainfall in many locations. The South should continue to have below-normal rainfall, with the Southwestern states having moderate monsoonal rains. The West Coast states are forecast to have little rainfall in the next five days.

The 6- to 10-day outlook (August 25-29, 2026) favors above-normal precipitation across the northern half of the Eastern Seaboard from South Carolina to the eastern Great Lakes region and into New England. Surplus precipitation is also favored throughout Hawaii and over most of mainland Alaska, except for the southern coast, southeast peninsula, and the Aleutian Islands. Below-normal rainfall is favored over much of Texas. Temperatures are likely to be well above-normal over much of the continental U.S. other than the far west coast and the eastern Great Lake to Mid-Atlantic. Hawaii is also favored to have above-normal warmth. Alaska is likely to be below-normal in the northwest part of the state and above-normal in the southeast part.
