USDA Weekly Crop Progress Report - Corn 4% Planted; Winter Wheat 47% in Good-to-Excellent Condition

OMAHA (DTN) -- U.S. corn planting was slightly behind last year's pace and the five-year average as of Sunday, April 13, according to USDA NASS' weekly Crop Progress report released on Monday.

Winter wheat conditions also declined slightly last week, NASS reported.

CORN

-- Planting progress: 4% of corn was planted nationwide as of Sunday, 2 points behind 6% last year and 1 point behind the five-year average of 5%. Texas was the furthest ahead at 63% complete -- 1 point ahead of both last year and the five-year average of 62%.

SOYBEANS

-- Planting progress: An estimated 2% of intended soybean acreage was planted as of Sunday, 1 point behind last year at this time but equal to the five-year average. Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas are leading the pack at 22%, 15% and 14% planted, respectively, noted DTN Senior Analyst Dana Mantini.

WINTER WHEAT

-- Crop condition: An estimated 47% of winter wheat was rated good to excellent as of April 13, down 1 point from 48% the previous week and below 55% at the same time last year, according to NASS. Texas', South Dakota's and Nebraska's winter wheat crops are among the worst rated, ranging from just 21% to 30% good to excellent, Mantini said. North Carolina is rated 77% good to excellent, Illinois and Indiana range from 66% to 67% good to excellent, Washington is at 69% and No. 1 winter-wheat-producer Kansas is rated 43% good to excellent.

-- Crop development: 8% of winter wheat was headed nationwide as of Sunday. That's 2 percentage points behind last year's 10% but equal to the five-year average. Texas' winter wheat was 30% headed, behind last year's 38% and behind the state's average pace of 33%.

SPRING WHEAT

-- Planting progress: 7% of the crop was planted nationwide as of April 13, 1 point ahead of last year's 6% but equal to the five-year average. Western states Idaho and Washington are leading the parade at 38% and 28% planted, respectively.
